Delightful original oil on canvas by noted Harrisburg artist & illustrator Walt Huber (Walter Huber). Painting is signed at lower left: "Walt Huber". I've owned this painting for 20+ years.
Entitled "Train Man", this unframed painting pictures a train engineer or oiler, his hat at a jaunty angle. Canvas is a "StretchRpanel" -- See pictures in this listing, please. Very basically, canvas on a thin metal stretcher with a backing of some sort of cardboard or composition material. (Per printing on the back... "This Panel Will Not Warp".) Canvas measures 16" wide and 20" high. On the back, a small piece of tape on which is hand printed: "cat no. 99 - Train Man". Perhaps an auction label? I don't know. A couple of very tiny punctures/dings -- hardly noticeable, and easily repaired -- or leave "as is". (One "ding" is just above the crown of the man's hat,the other is about 3/8 of an inch above the bottom stretcher, about 5.5" from the bottom-right corner. You can see both if you examine the pictures in this listing.) Canvas is fine and relatively taut, with a bit of very minor fraying at corners and at lower left beneath signature. All would be covered by a frame.
Brief Biography: Walter Huber (1886 - 1961) attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and Drexel Institute. He was later a sports cartoonist for The Philadelphia Inquirer and Bulletin & some Washington, D.C. newspapers. Also, he was a political cartoonist for the Harrisburg Patriot newspaper. He served as art director for J. Horace McFarland Co. in Harrisburg, and was on the faculty of (and was a charter member of) the Harrisburg Art Association. Huber was a founding member of "The Seven Lively Artists", an informal group of serious artists widely known and respected in the Harrisburg area.
Nifty colors, nicely-caught expression on the subject's face.
$145.00
I also have a couple of pen & ink drawings by Huber, if of interest. They are available separately.
