By Definition: A maven (also mavin) is a trusted expert in a particular field, who seeks to pass knowledge on to others.
As a skilled, intelligent, and experienced woman.... What talents, skills, or knowledge do you possess? What would you be willing to share or learn? What makes you a maven?
In the past communities relied on mavens to keep things going. Skills were bartered and shared and passed on from generation to generation. Each generation sopping up the experiences of the past like so many sponges in the sea. Times have changed. When we want to know something or get something done, these days instead of learning or relying on friends, neighbors, and relatives, we pay or we look it up online and find some half-a$$ed way of doing it. We get the idea, but the truth is, the quality and personal value is just not the same. Everything is so disposable and delegate-able. Well, I am setting up this group for women young in mind (21+) and spirit to see if we can change that. We all have something to share and that is what this group is about.
So now you are wondering what are the events going to be all about?
Some of the events will be Social. Are you a skilled wine or beer taster and can explain it? Are you a rockin’ bowler with some great skills to share? Do you know the rules to scrabble, country line dancing, or roller derby (at least as a spectator)? Some of the events will be about learning and having fun. Maybe you really want to try sushi but never have and would feel better if you went with someone who knows. Maybe you want to Karaoke but never got up the nerve. Maybe you’d like a night out with the ladies in jeans and a t-shirt, off to a hockey game but you have no idea what everything means so you have never gone. These events will be fun, educational, and just a way to get past some people’s fears and a way for others to share what they know. Members of the group will be able to volunteer their list of expertise and from that, we’ll be sure to have one social-based event/month.
Some of the events will be more Learning focused. Maybe you are a museum buff and want to share your knowledge of a museum. Maybe you want to learn how video editing works. Maybe you met your husband online and want to share your expertise in using online dating. Maybe you know how to write resumes or get a book published. Maybe you know how to book vacation trips at a discount, buy diamonds, or know how to plan a wedding. Perhaps you don’t understand how to use your company benefits programs. Maybe you know how to setup a home network, go on a hike, fix a lawn mower, drive an RV, collect coins, run for local election, make scrapbooks, garden, train a dog, crochet, can veggies, sew dresses, fix cars, how to buy appliances… what do you know and what can you share? What do you take pride in knowing and being good at?
Some of the events will be about Doing. By doing I mean that we all have busy lives and our friends and families are also so busy that no one seems to have time to help each other anymore. The crazy thing is, that if we got together, it would takes minutes on the hour to get things done. Do you love to help people pick colors for painting their house? Are you one of those people that likes to strip wall paper or knows about countertops? Would you like the opportunity to get together with a group of ladies and share family candy-making recipes or learn about them? Maybe you like organizing basements or helping people root through their old stuff to have the biggest yard-sale ever! Maybe you’d like to have a day when everyone brings their veggies to share and can together. Maybe you just need a little bit of help to make painting a kitchen a 3 hour job instead of a 5 day job by having a few people to help you out and to share their expertise and their passion and to teach each other along the way. Maybe you are passionate about volunteering for dog walking. Maybe you need a helping hand wrapping holiday gifts, or want some people to go on a charity walk with you. Whatever it is, as mavens we can share what we know and get the job done quickly. We ALL can use this kind of help. There will be rules for these kinds of events.
This sorority of women will thrive on contributions and ideas so anyone that has suggestions, please… share that is the whole point. The plan is to have at least two events/month. One event will be Social based and the other will be a Learning or a Doing Event.
This group requires its members to put themselves out there and learn and share things they may never have had the confidence or time to do before. This group will thrive on its authentic members. If you are that kind of person, then sign up today. The questions in the sign-up questionnaire are meant to create a profile and to gather suggestions from each Maven.
